Creative, calm, and caring plain language advocate

Hellie is passionate about writing. She loves words and language — which she believes should always be accessible to everyone. She’s the friendly face behind the Plain Language Awards, using her creative flair and calm presence to plan and coordinate it all.

She enthusiastically administrates for the 2023 Plain Language Awards and uses her exceptional organisational skills to organise everything behind the scenes. She coordinates the judges, creates and designs the marketing content, juggles entries, liaises with sponsors, and so much more.

Hellie has an Honours degree in international relations and has a varied and creative background. She’s done everything from theatre to analytical work, creative writing to policy research, as well as admin, retail, and hospitality too.

Helping raise the bar for plain language

Hellie is a big advocate for plain language, and truly cares about Write and the Plain Language Awards’ mission to use words for good. She believes plain language is important for accessibility and equity in communication, and she brings this into her work.

She feels that everyone should have equal and easy access to the services they need — especially people who speak English as an additional language, disabled people, and those with less access to education. She loves that plain language can bridge the divide in communication and create a fairer experience for all.
