I ask writers this question when I am delivering plain English workshops.
At Write Limited, we work to an international definition of plain language that says the wording, structure, and design of a document all contribute to its success.
The question often prompts discussion about whether documents will be read on paper or on screen. Writers talk about word choice, headings, and layout.
Nina Weil posed the question as a designer and typographer, thinking about readers with obsessive compulsive disorders. The resulting typographical experiments suggest strikingly different answers are possible.
Nina is a graduate of the College of Creative Arts at Massey University. Her work is on display in Wellington until 21 November as part of Exposure 2015.
